No you create it so you do not have to take your hands off the wheel, plus it is faster. You can't have the gear change rotate with the wheel because when you make a sharp turn you are rotating so far that the gear up would be on the opposite side. You can't drive with your hands at the 3 and 9 oclock positions the ENTIRE time. You wouldn't be able to shift.

It looks like paddle shift does not rotate with steering wheel. Why F1 invented invented the paddle shift was that you do not need to leave steering on gear change. Are Ferrari people thinking???
